The 5 albums that I listened to the most, enjoyed the most or touched me in some way in 2009. The images are Spotify links to the albums. Here we go:
5. Dan Black - Un
Yes, it’s fluffy, but in a good, cheerful way. And it’s smart. Smarter than you might think. Dan has made 45 minutes of great pop and I enjoyed it immensely. I love how it becomes more subdued as the album carries on.
If you listen to one track, make it… Alone.
4. Beirut - March of the Zapotec and Realpeople Holland
OK, so it’s a double EP really, but who would have thought it would have worked so well together? Hints of the Beirut you know and love yet certainly fresh, followed by Zach’s side-project Realpeople. When I first got it, I would listen to one or the other. Now, they’re the perfect compliment to each other. Yes it’s not the masterpiece that The Flying Club Cup was, but whenever I play it, it makes me happy and that’s good enough for me.
If you listen to one track (from each EP), make it… The Akara on March of the Zapotec and Venice on Holland.
3. Metric - Fantasies
For me, it was the year’s perfect rock album. The kind you turn the volume up on your headphones to the level where you know it’s bad for you, but you don’t care because it’s so good. Live, they’re even better. I played this album a lot, and it thoroughly deserves its spot on this list.
If you listen to one track, make it… Gold Guns Girls.
2. Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix
To my loss, I only really started listening to Phoenix when this album came out. Now they’re easily one of my favourite bands. Wolfgang is a great, fun album. It makes me believe the world is a great place and makes me feel a little bit like my life is a movie, when I’m listening to it, walking on the streets of London.
If you listen to one track, make it… 1901.
1. The xx - xx
I listen to it in full, every day, since the day I heard it. It’s that good. Just. Wow.
If you listen to one track, make it… Heart Skipped A Beat.
